What are the bone fracture treatments available at SUNCOR Hospital?

The core objective of any below treatment is to combine all broken pieces together and prevent moving out of place until they are completely healed.

Closed Reduction and Slab/ Cast Immobilization

It is a non-surgical procedure; wherein local anesthesia, sedative injection, or general anesthesia are given to the patient before proceeding. Our doctor and his team will now pull the bones on either side of the fracture in such a manner as to line up the broken bone inside and applies a splint or cast on it. If your fracture is of Simple variety or stable, then slab or cast immobilization is the best treatment that we adopt, wherein a plaster, fiberglass cast, or FlexiOH cast is applied on the broken bones once they have been repositioned in order to keep the broken bones in the proper position until they heal completely.

Surgery for Fractures

Internal fixation
First of all broken bone fragments are realigned by means of the open or closed method and then fixed with some sort of implants above the surface or within the fractured bone fragments e.g. Rod is inserted within the canal of a fractured bone, a plate is fixed above the surface of fractured fragments with the help of screws and wires.

External fixation
In case of an open fracture or in case of polytrauma as temporary stabilization, your doctor might choose an external fixation method to fix your fractured bone. Many times once the patient is clinically stable, the patient can be taken for definitive surgery by means of internal fixation after removing the external fixator device. In the external fixation methods, the surgeon puts screws in your bone on either side of the fracture inside your body and connects them with rods or rings outside the bone, in order to stabilize your fracture.

Arthroplasty
It is a joint replacement surgery, which is highly used when the fracture is in the shoulder, elbow, hip, or knee joints, wherein the surgeon removes the damaged joint and replaces it with an artificial joint. Arthroplasty is preferred when the surgeon can’t preserve or osteosynthesizethe fracture.

Bone grafting
This is the case when the fracture is severely displaced or the bone fracture is not healing, wherein the surgeon inserts additional bone tissue to rejoin your fractured bone. The bone tissue can be taken from somewhere in your body, an external donor, or an artificial piece. Further, internal fixation is performed for better holding of the pieces together while bone regrows.

No matter how complex the bone fracture is, Dr. Chirag P. Jain assures you of quick and content relief from the bone fracture.
